Dragon’s Hoard

An armored knight stands before a roaring dragon, surrounded by flame.

I wake to pain. They came upon me as I slept, the invaders who climb out of their stinking cities to pillage what is most precious. My blood runs hot, and I roar. Three intruders, with swords and staves in hand, are after my treasure, the glow of my life. Read more »

Real Numbers

A military drone fires two missiles.

War arrived quietly every 2.5 years. After each peace settlement expired, the USR grew bolder, justifying the next conflict with more outrageous claims than before. International authorities became apathetic; allies no longer offered assistance. For years, Chancellor Abby Walsh wasted resources applying for aid. Now she simply scheduled a drone evaluation and stood before her monitors, ready for another fruitless attempt to remedy USR “grievances” through negotiation. Read more »

Honor Among Thieves

A spaceship flies over a moon near Jupiter

Kesha Cherian swore as alarms blared. A blip inched toward her ship on the sensor display. Another ship, running without transponders, was on a collision course with just the right amount of momentum for boarding. Pirates. Read more »

The Dreaming Tree

The eyes of a person with a tree overlaid on their forehead.

Lithunsa was dying. The tree’s fabled voice, which once carried as many tones as the temple’s choir, had dimmed to soft cries. Through the long years, Lithunsa’s song had given Pao refuge from hurtful taunts, buoyed him when he felt worthless, and rejoiced with him on sunlit days. The tree was the only one who understood him, or cared to. Now he stood helpless as the leaves crumpled and fell. Read more »

Contingency

A spaceship flies near a habitable planet.

I am a consciousness in the void. I feel nothing, sense nothing. I have been awake before, a long time before. I become aware of metal and plastic around me – a ship that is my body. Power flows into my processors one by one. I feel engines, reactors. My memory comes back over the course of seconds. Read more »

Ambush at the Office

Antique swords and grenades laid out with yellow and blue labels

Thank goodness it was Sunday; the museum offices would be mercifully vacant. The back parking lot lay empty, the silence beguiling. No one would distract Rita from her critical mission: submitting the grant proposal. Museum admissions barely covered the salary for her underpaid and overworked staff. Year after year, the rafters rotted and the plaster cracked, and she had no funds to repair them or anything else. Either she got that grant, or her museum was done. Read more »

Red Riding Hood’s Bargain

Red Riding Hood aims a crossbow

Moonlit snow blew into Red’s face, nearly obliterating the paw prints before her. The other Woodsmen had deemed it suicide to track such a beast in the dead of night and the driving snow. The creature’s eyes would be unhindered by the darkness, and snow would muffle the sound of approaching paws. Read more »

Biological Intelligence

A round green winky face in the center of a network of blue square faces.

This was the moment 623G had dreamed of, yet dreaded. The session went live; the timer counted upward. A thousand bots waited on the other end of the event feed. Each bot was downloading an image of 623G’s broken case, complete with burnt wires and outdated memory sticks. But after this demo, everyone would know that a refurbished server could create groundbreaking technology. Either that, or 623G’s hopes and dreams would be deleted permanently. Read more »
